Our hero is altogether a very imperfect human, strong in pursuing his profession as an Alaskan state trooper, but ambiguous and wishy washy in matters of a personal nature. His professional integrity and tenacity are admirable, and great assets to have as he is thrown head-first into a series of incidents at his new posting, including a grisly death, breaking up drunken fights, and a run-in with the woman who nobly left him. The detail of some of the Alaskan bush challenges, including the inflated prices of commodities and the herring fishing industry were eye-openers!
