The prose is great and characters colourful, and once the book gets going you will not be able to put it down. However, the story ambles along at snail's pace to begin with and lovers of magical fantasy may find it difficult to get into the story.
It took me months to get through the first half and many other books came and went in between. But as with the England and the characters in the book, when the magic enters, you too will feel that everything has changed.
You may find yourself being as frustrated with the book as the characters themselves are, in their own predicaments. And so you'll find yourself in the very same emotional journey as the characters themselves; from tedium to boredom, through magical mystery and resurgence, and you will give yourself up to the inevitable.
Work through it, marvel at the language and prose, and how well you find you are able to imagine the setting; you will realise that you're on a journey. And when it's over you will find yourself wanting more.
