It wasn't until years after I read this book that I learned of the stark political motives behind it. This symbol of American independence (particularly in the television show it spawned) often masks heavy government assistance and aid for white folk moving onto native land, and downplays the sinister role of large corporations in controlling life in small towns. I used to know more about Ms. Wilder's adult politics, but I forget, I just wanted to post some negativity. ;P
