Hawthorne seems to have some feminist leanings which come out in the sympathy he seems to show for Hester during her ordeals. It is interesting to get such a perspective from a male author of a time when women were generally not seen as equal.

The story is engaging but I had hoped for a greater emotional response and a deeper exploration of the romance and turmoil.

But all and all, this is a worthwhile read.
