After reading Robert Massie's "Catherine the Great," I had to read the earlier history of Russia. The book is comprehensive and long ... and fascinating. Peter the Great was a reformer, religiously tolerant, but also brutal and unforgiving. The mid-1600s to the early 1700's -- the intrique, wars, the founding of the Russian navy, and Peter's creation of St. Petersburg out of a swamp are detailed. This is the history of Russia and Europe, of Peter the Great attempting, and somewhat succeeding, in bringing Russia out of barbarianism into the enlightenment.
