A novel that I missed the first time around, and have wanted to read ever since. I wasn't disappointed. Anno Dracula takes a splendid and simple 'what if' (what if Van Helsing, Harker, and others failed to prevent Dracula establishing himself in Britain), and runs with it. As he does so, he introduces characters from his own mythologies, as well as from popular fiction, building a revisionist Victorian Britain that's a more coherent and believable than the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach Alan Moore takes in his Extraordinary Gentlemen series. The reward is a credible fictional universe that you can lose yourself in with ease. A modern classic.
