If the first book in the series is not my favorite, then this one is. A ghost city appearing in the moonlight where all the what-ifs and might-have-beens are made possible, the family intrigue taken to the next level, and an ending that makes me glad this book was written some thirty years ago and the next one can be read right away.

Finally, if a novel is to be measured by a believable change in its protagonist, boy, this is a winner, and Corwin hasn't even made it to the fifth one yet. And the change is as subtle as it is profound.

Finally-finally, when I was reading this for the first time - I should have been around fifteen then - I dreamed it after reading it. And it was one of the most beautiful and horrid dreams I have ever had. And maybe that's the real reason why I love this book so much. Or anything else, for that matter.
