I received an advance review copy of this book from Hyperion/Voice Publishers. Katherine Howe’s first novel, The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, was a bestseller during it’s release in 2009. I predict that The House of Velvet and Glass will not disappoint Howe’s fans.

Set in 1915, just prior to World War I, Sybil Allston is a 27 year old woman who is struggling to come to grips with the loss of her sister and mother, who died tragically with the sinking of The Titanic. Sybil seeks solace in the form of seánces, hoping for reassurance from beyond the grave, that all will be well.

What’s great about this book: the story is excellent – it grabs you from the beginning and doesn’t let you go until the very last page. Ms. Howe also paints a vivid picture of the time period. I personally did not care for the angle that the supernatural events which happened in the book were real. Maybe it’s just me, but there were times when it seemed a bit forced. I’m sure many who read this book will not mind in the least, and find this book extremely enjoyable. 3 1/2 stars.
