In 2010 Dan Chaon’s amazing novel Await Your Reply came from seemingly nowhere to secure a spot on my year end best of list. That was my first and only exposure to his writing. I was excited to read more from him, but for one reason or another I never found the time to delve into his back catalog of work. When I caught wind of the fact that he had something new coming out however, I couldn’t resist picking it up.

I have to admit that initially I was skeptical about Stay Awake. It’s a short story collection and me and those, well, we have a contentious relationship with one another. They generally frustrate me to no end, and usually contain one or two amazing pieces that are surrounded by a pile of uneven junk. I keep trying though, hoping that something will stick. Over the past few months I’ve endured collections by Edith Pearlman, Alan Heathcock, Zsuzsi Gartner, and Shann Ray, all of which we’re disappointing, and then I finally discovered Matthew J. Trafford’s The Divinity Gene which was the exception to the norm, a volume that was quite amazing and amusing. So would Stay Awake keep me alert and interested or would I be bored to the point of dozing off?
