This graphic novel was a lot of fun, and I see the appeal of the series. The Lunch Ladies are secret superheroes, and in this volume they battle the League of Librarians who are out to destroy all the game systems to force kids to read.

Simple illustrations are combined with some lovely language, making for an adorable quick read.

While it may sound like a plot that discourages reading, one of the main trio of kids involved in the story is a solid reading role model, and there are some fun book references built into the battles that may just spark a child to pick up an old classic like Alice in Wonderland or the Narnia books.

The only thing that slightly concerned me was the continued stereotype of "girls are readers, boys are gamers". The trio of kids that help out the lunch ladies include one voracious girl reader and two boys who just want their game systems. While I know this can often be the case, it might have been nice to see the girl interested in the game systems also - and the boys also intrigued by good books. Just saying.
