I'm not sure why this book has been so well-received. Esquivel successfully integrated the recipies and plot, and she did so in an interesting way. But the isolated instances of metafiction--exaggerated descriptions that should be mere hyperbole that actually become major plot points--ruined my ability to suspend disbelief.
And I was severely disappointed by what I can only assume was the unintentional message of the story: that lust and love are the same thing. After all Tita goes through, I couldn't believe that she chose Pedro over John. Also, one of the worst and most bizarre endings I've ever read.
