I really did enjoy this. It made me realize just how much of the traditional story had been lost to my memory by all the 'omissions' of the Disney version we all seem to know too well. (No aspersions towards Disney, but I missed the other elements that this book reminded me of, even though it, too, is a 'retelling'). I thought it was quite a wonderful touch (obviously more than a bit ironic) that Beauty viewed herself as plain compared to her sisters. I enjoyed how the author fleshed out the father's reversal of fortune often mentioned just in passing in the traditional tale; the story became more real to me through the details of how things in the household had to be sold, and how the family adjusted to being poor and having to move to the country. I thought the author spent just the right amount of time with this part of the story before the 'beast' ever entered the narrative. All in all, a really enjoyable book, and one that I finished quickly.
