This book was different than most of the picture books I have read because it is wordless. I like that it is wordless in a way that one can create their own story. However, I tried reading this book to a four year old and a five year old, and they did not like that there were no words. They asked me to make up a story to go along with the words. I found this interesting because it seemed that just looking at the pictures was not enough. The illustrations in this book are worthy of a Caldecott in my opinion. I enjoy that the dog is well detailed and the bright colors throughout. It is interesting that the dog gets bigger throughout. That works to show the aging of the dog and how the story is progressing. Also, I found it interesting that the dogs are different colors. This showed the diversity in the world even in the animal world. I enjoyed this book and it is well worthy of the Caldecott medal.
