This book points out that advancements in fuel efficiency merely increase our desire for it. Example: making cars more fuel efficient and comfortable and cost efficient increases our desire to drive: take road trips, live farther from work, giving us suburban sprawl and more paved roads, which make us want to live there, drive there, in an endless circle. Conundrum. According to the author, the most ecologically correct people are city dwellers who have their workplaces and services close enough to work to, and inserting "green spaces" into cities is counterproductive (he does not touch on the mental ramifications of no green spaces). Conundrum. So, in order for the environment to thrive, or even to survive, all humans must be caged in as small a area as possible and not travel or go to national parks. Will humans (even Chinese humans) ever be enlightened enough to voluntarily do this? He doubts it. Conundrum. Maybe the government will have to it. Travesty (my word). Obama is trying by making the gas prices rise, because he knows better than the rest of us. Not touched upon in book is my husband's POV, that gov. is trying to get us into cities because the entire infrastructure supporting the highways and suburbs is on the point of complete failure and we haven't got the resources to rebuild it (unless we borrow more from the Chinese). My POV: Where is a nice universal pandemic when you need it?
