This book suffered from a lot of the same downfalls as the first one -- head-hopping, authorial intrusion, too much focus on the perspective of the adult characters. And because it's more plot-driven than character driven, there were a lot of places where I was just plain bored. I remain more interested in the "backstory" to this series than the present story, so this book held my interest best around the middle, where it gave the backstory some attention. The creatures created to populate Atherton are truly fascinating -- I have a feeling Patrick Carman has strange dreams at night. It's a solid middle-grade adventure story, but it's shortcomings as a book make me long to see it as a movie instead.
