I can't find a link to the English version of this book - title, this night's foul work. Also, I can't read French, but I'm guessing this is the right book, given the image of the leaping stag, which figures prominently in this book. It starts with two deaths; everyone is convinced that it's simply drug-related, but Adamsberg, with his head in the clouds, thinks it's something more. And indeed it is; another series of mystical events, a policeman who speaks in twelve-syllable verse, and a mysterious shade.

The problems I had with the last two books, in terms of pacing, are wonderfully absent here. Fred Vargas had me here from beginning to end, weaving into the solving of the murder a history of two boys. Wonderfully done.
