I really like William Boyd's writing. He wrote one of my favourite books (Any Human Heart) and having read the previews for this, his latest novel, I couldn't wait to read it. I think I raised my expectations a tad too high and thus I was disappointed overall. And yet it started so well - the opening section set in Vienna really grabbed me and drew me in and I thought 'Yay! Another one as good as Any Human Heart!' But then the hero returns to Blighty and the tone and intensity seemed to change (for me, at least). It's still good, but not as good as I think I expected it to be. 3.5 stars.
