I love the Hornblower saga. I've read it so many times I can effortlessly skim the tack/avast/stun'sl'stay'reef stuff. In fact in this novel there's a section about adjusting the distribution of weight inside the ship (the titular Hotspur) to improve handling. With the first idea the realization is made that she'll "gripe". No clue what that means, but it's still nice to read, because it's such an effective way of demonstrating how good a sailor Hornblower is.
