This is the first of a trilogy that takes one science fiction concept -- the notion that openings between our time and another point in the future after the world has largely been destroyed -- and runs with it. Author Patrick Lee assembles a fairly stock set of characters but breaths enough life in them to give you people to root for. What I like most is the way both his heroes and villans act logically and intelligently, so when they think of something clever, it's possible that the other side is one step ahead of them. And people use the various McGuffins in ways that seem practical, rather than for cartoonish or outlandish reason. Overall, this novel is a lot of fun.
