What is it about Swedish islands in the deserted, off season that stirs up unsolved crimes? And yet, as artfully told as this, the premise never gets tiring. The secrets behind the disappearance of an innocent, young boy and the disappearance of a violent, young man (some 25 years earlier) are revealed with delicate pacing and such skillful foreshadowing that each turn in the story is both surprising and deepening. Perhaps central of all to the story is the landscape itself, stark and stolid but described with such reverence that the reader is carried along not only in plot but in an appreciation of the setting's umbilical relationship with the souls of the protagonists and the philosophical strength it has infused in them.
