This is the first Anne Perry novel I have read. I started off quite interested as Thomas Pitt and his sidekick embarked on a chase after a murder but it soon waned. I did read on through to the end but found it never totally engaged me. I never became emotionally involved with the characters. I found their actions unbelievable and that I wanted to skip bits where nothing was happening. It had a lot to do with problems between Ireland and England and long memories. But in the end I didn't really care about the characters. Now maybe it could be because I'm not usually a big fan of historial fiction or maybe I wasn't in the right mood or it was the wrong book at the wrong time after The Swan Thieves. But for whatever reason I found it readable but hardly gripping.
