Malcolm Fox works in the Complaints and Conduct Dept of the Lothian and Borders Police Dept in Scotland. As one case is just winding up, he is called by the Child Protection office in his department to look at Jamie Breck, another cop. In the meantime, he gets a call from his sister's neighbour as his sister has broken her arm, perhaps having been beaten by her live-in boyfriend. As these two happenings become intertwined, an interesting storyline develops.
