For a modern re-write of Jane Eyre, which is one of my all-time favorite books, I thought this was well done. However, I don't think it is possible for this story to have quite the same dramatic impact as Jane Eyre. Even though she is presented with huge challenges, Gemma has more options available to her than Jane did simply because of the 20th century setting. Going to university was never an option for Jane, but Gemma was able to work toward that as a realistic, although difficult, goal.
