I don't know what kind of chef Gabrielle Hamilton is but she is a pretty good writer. Unfortunately she is not ready or willing to truly apply her incisive and also lyrical writing skills to her inner life. She is candid talking about her first-charmed-then-turned-upside-down childhood, her druggie adolescence, her relationship with her beloved Italian mother-in-law and oh yes, lots of good food stories in between. But something is still missing once you get past the outrageous stories ... meant to dazzle the reader so she doesn't notice that Hamilton doesn't really dwell on her insights?
