Healers were revered until a plague broke out. For the first time in memory the healers encountered an illness that they couldn’t fix. They got blamed, not only for choosing not to heal plague victims but for starting it in the first place. Little did the people realize that trying to heal a plague victim would kill the healer. Ever since then Healers have been hunted down and executed. Avry was just an apprentice at the time, but it doesn’t matter, she will still be killed if she is discovered. Unfortunately she has a hard time refraining from healing people, especially little children. In one village she finally ends up getting caught. The night before her execution a band of men break her out of jail. Their leader, Kerrick, rescued Avry for one reason, he needs her to heal Prince Ryne. Avry can’t stand Kerrick and has no intention of trading her life for Ryne’s. Kerrick offers to protect her as they travel in exchange for letting him try and convince her to heal the Prince. Having no better choice Avry agrees.

For me, this was a stay up longer than I should to finish the story kind of book. Avry made it onto my favorite list of characters for the year. She was smart, self-sufficient, and passionate. The story had a good mix of humor, intrigue, and romance. It was a nice change to have a romance develop, instead of instant attraction. I tend to be a sucker for the hate you before I like you kinds of romances anyway. I liked how developed the relationships between the other characters were. The loyalty the band of friends displayed was endearing. The bad guy was creepy and slimy as were his henchmen. The plot had good pacing. I never felt like we were stuck, or just racing back and forth without direction. So needless to say, I am definitely looking forward to book two.
