The Red Book
by Deborah Copaken Kogan
by Deborah Copaken Kogan
I read this as an advance reader's copy. It's the story of 4 women at their 20th college reunion (Harvard class of '89),whose lives are very different from the short blurbs they submit to Red Book, the reunion synopsis. The group treated in the story is diverse in terms of race, nationality, and sexaul preference, and the book at least touches on a raft of social issues, including same-sex marriage, pre- and extra-marital sex, abortion, May-December relationships, infertility and birth control, sex change-surgery, and suicide. With so many characters and issues out there, Kogan has very little time for character development, and the characters that do get attention are not very sympathetic. (It's hard to feel too sorry for the producere's wife who may have to sell the second home in Antibes.) That said, I will confess that it was hard to put the book down. I would gladly take it to the beach - but I will not be recommending it to my book group.
