** spoiler alert ** Re-read to see why The Word for World is Forest reminded me of this book-- the central conflict of one culture being subsumed under another, and what the repressed people do to keep their history alive. In tWfWiF it's basically chase the aliens back; here, there are no aliens, just different natives, and the influence of crazy Terrans. Two problems with this book, the large infodump in the middle where the ethnologist is learning the villagers secret lifestyle, and the non-ending. Charitably, the ending is more like how the Rangmans like to tell stories, without morals or clean endings. But the climax seems to be two people talking about what their childhoods were like. So the setting and travel descriptions and alien culture get an A, but the plot for me ranks a C.
