This book was good but not great. I found the dialogue for the English characters far-fetched. The other characters seemed much more realistic. Everything was pretty neatly wrapped up at the end for those who like books like that. It's not really about one character more than another; there are several story lines that weave through the book.
Some of the facts that Vanderhaeghe revealed about Indian life and life on the plains in that era and area were very interesting. I had never heard about a "bote" before or what type of person they might be, or that aspect of Indian culture. I would have liked maybe a little more depth on some issues but since the book wasn't about Jerry Potts primarily, it makes sense that certain topics were only mentioned briefly.
I think I will try The Englishman's Boy and his newest book also as the topic and time in history are interesting to me.
