Travel writing is sometimes dated and this book was written in the early 2000s, not long after 9/11; however, it holds up fairly well. Russia is continuing to change rapidly and that is probably most evident in more out of the way places like Siberia. Frazier covers a lot of territory in this book, not only through his actual travels, but in the background that he includes about all of the places visited and the changes in the politics that have been so marked since the early 90s. A friend from eastern Russia thinks it is still a good view of Siberia, even now. And the book is well-written and worth reading.
