I read several reviews that said "The Hollow Hills" was not as good as "The Crystal Cave." I disagree. I felt that Merlin was a much more understandable character. One truly sees him as a holy man and a prophet, and I had a better understanding of his power. The young Arthur is also very believable, a mixture of the physical Uther and spiritual Ambrosius. And the scene where Arthur finally removes the sword from the stone is very powerful. I will say, however, that many of the nay sayers for this book felt the plot moved too slowly, or that not enough happened early on in the book. I did not feel that way, but I also tend to think many books move too quickly and I don't get enough handle on the characters. So, I think it's personal preference. If you're a reader that prefers a quicker pace, this book may not be for you, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
