I've been wanting to read this book for years, and maybe the hype got to me. I don't know, but these stories all seemed the same to me. The first story and the last are pretty genius, but all the ones in between break the cardinal rule of good story telling i.m.o (among other faux pas) they tell way too much without showing enough. They all come from the same voice of the same first person narrator and they all deal with characters performing some post-post modern job in some post-post modern hell (and I get it already) and all the stories seem to be coming from a commentator commenting on the story rather than being immersed in it... Basically, I don't think it was awful, just overrated.
