I think I am finding that I enjoy Ken Bruen's Jack Taylor novels but am less fond of his other work. Once Were Cops is riddled with unbelievable characters and tired cliches. The novel's frequent shifts in narrative voice seemed more lazy than anything else and references to favorite songs, authors and etc, seem shoe-horned in.

So why did I give Once Were cops three stars? Well, even bad Bruen is still very readable. The story zips right along and, while the novel is not necessary good, it is entertaining enough by way of a guilty pleasure. I think I'll stick to Bruen's Jack Taylor novels from here though.
