Soul Enchilada was a book I found really by accident. I started reading it halfheartedly, but after I got a few pages in, I couldn't put the book down. Now, I am not a big fan of YA, for the reason that usually the teen romance angle overshadows the actual plot and the girls in the story seem to think that finding love is the be-all and end-all of existence.

SE is not at all like that. The plot in unique, intriguing, and set in my hometown (okay, so maybe I'm a little biased). The main character is a strong female figure who is trying to maintain control over her life while outside forces and one selfish, dead grandfather threaten to tear it apart. She finds love, but she doesn't swoon over the boy in question. She struggles with her choice to allow him into her life; she doubts; she tries to protect him from her destiny.
