Wow. Like The Taker, this was an intense read that it will take some time to properly absorb. I had such high expectations, and this book still amazed me. I was completely shocked by some events and generally surprised by the overall story. I love how Alma Katsu has such a subtle, lyrical quality to her writing while the content itself is often so disturbing. All the characters are horribly flawed; there is no 'good guy' to cheer for, just various levels of villainy to observe. For immortals, they are dealing with some remarkably relatable human issues. I found it wonderful/awful that Katsu made me feel so many unexpected emotions considering the events (sorry to be cryptic - don't want to spoil). For example, I don't want to understand why Adair acts the way he does, let alone feel compassion and pity for him. After two books, I still don't know how I feel about Lanore, but I'm so sorry she's going through all of this even though I'm aware it's all her own doing. I can't really say more without spoiling, but suffice to say I absolutely love it! This sequel did not disappoint.
