it was amazing
bookshelves: purrfection, reviewed

I really liked this book because it got everything I want from fantasy stories right. How often do I get that, huh? Once in a blue moon, if you check my list...I should get to reading math textbooks, that would get me what I expect every time. Ok, back on track here...This book rocks because it has the following...
Strong female lead: check. I mean, holy shit, she can actually fight and does not turn into a blubbering blob screaming *save meeeee* at the nearest guy. She's also pretty funny to listen to (1st person narrative) and is amoral enough to be adorkable.
Characters that feel alive: check. I mean, a secondary cast can make or break a story but no need to worry here, we left the paper bags way behind. It doesn't hurt that most of them are gorgeous model-types. What? Why are you looking at me like that? I'm shallow that way, so sue me...
Worldbuilding beyond the Sims neighborhood: check. You can feel there is a world out there and the city where the action takes place evokes a sense of history to it.
Engaging lighthearted story: check. I am so sick and tired of those "gritty" stories that are an excuse for torture porn (and just plain porn) but I don't really like those parody-style comic fantasy books either. This sits nicely in the middle. Not shitty-gritty, not too unrealistic.
Special mention for NOT featuring abuse as character development: check. I've noticed a disturbing tendency of fantasy writers to use rape and other horribly inventive abuse as "backstory" for female characters. Well, hallelujah, there is NONE here. I feeling like crying for joy that a strong female character did NOT need to be gangbanged to be strong.
Finally, I should mention that this book is pure escapist joy. If you're looking for social commentary or shitty-gritty stuff look elsewhere but if you want a lighthearted, funny, feel-good read pick it up.
