The world-building was well done, with a rich and interesting middle-eastern flair. The writing was polished and tight for a debut novel. Unfortunately I found the pace to be a big sluggish, which I can excuse for the first bit of 500+ page novel, but not in one this "short" for fantasy. The characters also didn't grab me like I was hoping –  I just didn't care about them very much. I really wanted to love this book, but I don't really get the hype surrounding it. I've read quite a few more "cliche" fantasy novels that I've enjoyed more simply because the plot or characters were more engaging. I will probably read the next novel in the series when it comes out, however, just to see what else this author has to offer.
