Paulo Coelho is so hit or miss sometimes, I kind of read his books with hesitation. I find that his form of armchair philosophy is at its best when he deals with a specific philosophical or moral question as opposed to general "secrets to life." He often makes me cringe at the earnestness of the dialogue but more often than not, it's still enjoyable and even if I don't agree with his logic or conclusions, I find that I still want to know what they are.
Anyway, this novel, thank the literary gods, is one of the ones I've enjoyed. It's a warm and fuzzy fable about the devils of temptation in which Coelho examines good vs evil in an annoyingly ying-yang-y way, and heaven vs hell (and angels vs devils) in an annoyingly christian way before arriving at the obvious moral that the ability to avoid temptation is more about the bravery of choice than it is about shoring up your moral foundations to be a super human above it all.
