Courtney Schafer's debut novel is a smart, fast-paced work that gives the reader spice and surprise, two things that are still hard to find in the fantasy genre. I was delighted with the way the tale keeps things fresh by being a mountain trek adventure in one half, and in the next half involving the two main characters in a complex magical feud. Some books are satisfied with merely managing to not insult their readers' intelligence, but Schafer makes you think, with one of the most elaborately constructed magic-systems I've seen in a long while. She keeps the tension and stakes high through the whole narrative, never quite giving her characters a break and thus maintaining the reader's interest. "The Shattered Sigil" is one series I can't wait to read through.
