Fallen Angels is a story of a one year tour in Vietnam during the war. It is told through the eyes of 18 year old Richie Perry, who once lived in the ghetto in Harlem Mass. and lost his chance to go to college. He is sent to the front lines deep in Vietnam. It mainly goes through his life at camp and him and his comrades trying to relieve themselves from the extreme boredom that comes from sitting in a military camp all day. Also, it describes the fighting against the Vietnamese soldiers and the terrors that a soldier in the Vietnam War would have to face.
This book would be perfect for teens that like reading about war and are “history buffs”. It is very realistic, especially the action scenes depicted, because the characters reactions to the terror that happens is very realistic. The characters get scared and it shows it, and that’s why I like it. Even the characters that are “big headed” get scared like you would expect from anyone in that situation. It shows the brotherhood and bonds that arise in a hectic place such as Vietnam during the war, and what lengths people will go to in order protect each other. The issue of racial segregation in the war during the time is also pointed out many times. Richie and his platoon members are mostly African American and many times they discuss their belief that African American platoons are sent to do the more life threatening missions while other platoons get it easy. The author is very good at depicting the thoughts of Richie’s opposition against the war.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes history and/or war and violence I think more boys than girls will be able to get into it for the simple reason that boys seem to get enjoy war situations(For example, war video games). I also think it shows the reader the consequences from war very well and people need to understand that.
