This is not a biography so much as a critical analysis and comparison of previous biographies, academic texts, documentaries about Marilyn Monroe. It is amazingly well researched and the author quite amusingly shows how ridiculous Norman Mailer, Joyce Carol Oates, and even Gloria Steinem have been in their attempts to illuminate the "real" Marilyn. What this book ultimately does is give us a better sense of the real Marilyn than any biography. Marilyn is fascinating and unbelievably talented (literally - it seems that most people have not given her credit for this) and this book is fun and didn't take too long to read.
