I enjoyed this book Prayers for Sale, even more than Sandra Dallas' book Whiter Than Snow which I thought was a great book. Through the main character in the book, Dallas shows her extraordinary talent as a storyteller. Set in the early 1900's in a mining community in Colorado, Dallas gives a detailed view of what life was life in a mining community at that time, the dangers they faced and the ways in which the women endured such a harsh life. Dallas obviously has a thorough knowledge of much folklore and also of specific expressions and idioms of parts of the South which comes through in her portrayal of 2 main female characters, Hennie and Nit. Although both of these women have gone through difficult times and experienced tragedies involving babies, they both show the development of a strength necessary to live in such a harsh environment and not lose their ability to reach out to others in need. A truly great book!
