** spoiler alert **
The original Sherlock tone is well-conveyed, the characters are as we've always known them, and the plot, while not terribly subtle, comes together in a suitably interlocked way. I'm quite content with this continuation of the classic series.
We had some readers bring it back unfinished, however, due to the homosexual nature of the eponymous house and the mention of child abuse and violence. While not horrifically graphic, this is definitely something to be aware of when RAing this title. For our teens, currently having a Sherlock fiesta in the library thanks to the BBC TV production, I don't think that this book is excessively violent or sexual for regular readers of current, topical YA titles, especially given Watson's rather moralistic tone in telling the story.
