I appreciate that Vogel didn't shy away from the emotional complexities of the incestuous and pedophiliac relationship between Li'l Bit and her uncle. Because of this play's subject matter, I (perhaps unfairly) expected to have a strong emotional response, and the fact that I didn't is most likely because I read it instead of seeing it performed, but - and maybe this is because I just read Brecht - there is also some alienation of the audience going on here. I can't decide whether or not I think alienation is an effective tool in telling this kind of story, but I'm definitely going to be thinking about this play more than I expected.
