Whew. I finished "Acheron" by Sherrilyn Kenyon in the wee hours of the morning. Even though I picked up the book on Tuesday, I held off starting in on it until after work on Friday because I KNEW that once I started I wouldn't put it down until I finished it. I was right. Acheron's story was larger than life, just like Acheron himself. My emotions ran the gamut from despair to joy as I read his story. As others have commented, the first part of the book was almost painful to read. Each time I finished a chapter and thought, "Whew, now things will get better for him." But they didn't. I liked the fact that the author warned us in her note at the beginning of the book that the story would be painful. Reading that she herself has firsthand knowledge of childhood abuse made Acheron's past that much more poignant. But by providing a happy ending for him, Kenyon really made this book a paean to all those who have experienced abuse and overcome.
I won't take the time to retell any of his story. Suffice to say that until the age of 21, Acheron's suffering was horrific and endless. My emotions are still reeling, hours after I finished with the happy ending. Will I reread this book? My first instinct is to say no...but I think that time will likely change my mind. Does that make this a great book? I don't know that either. But I DO know that those are just a few things that make this a book I will never forget.

Its mentally exhausting isnt it? I havent read many books that make me feel like this one did. I probably will read it again in the future. H
I'll be reading it in the next week or so. Can't wait! Thanks, everyone, for warning me ahead of time how intense it is. At least I know we get a great HEA at the end. :)xoxo

I very much appreciate the reviews. I just cannot do it now. I feel so shallow. Ash sounds like a full emotiorama. I work in a locked facility for young adults, a real Heartbreak Hotel. I can't do child abuse all day and then read it later during my free time. I need some real vacation and separation before I can. Enjoy. Keep writing those reviews.B
Yeah BB- this can be a pretty tough read... especially the beginning. If you work with kids/ young adults that have dealt with abuse, this may not be the book for you until you get some time off. When you do however, give it a try. It has a great HEA...

BB,I recommend you hold off. I'm worried for Laura with her background and yours is so much closer because of your current situation. The first part of the book is heartbreaking but can be emotionally cathartic UNLESS you can't find some distance.
Hang in there girl!!
J
no no Marion...it's very good and if you've been following the Dark Hunters this book is crucial to understanding their past and Acheron's past. But we do have some folks on here who were victims of child abuse and the descriptions in the book are very frank. As with any survivor of abuse, sometimes the memories return and ambush you. I just want those readers who may have memories triggered by the book to be aware and watchful.J
Thanks, Julie. You are so sweet to worry about me! You've really touched my heart with your concern. Thanks!I know this is going to be a really tough one for me, but I am a big fan of the Dark-Hunter and Dream-Hunter series and have read (and collected) every one so far. Not to mention I'm totally in love with Ash.
Anyway, I have been talking myself into this one because of all the warnings in the reviews, so I know it's going to be very hard for me. And frankly I wouldn't even put myself through it if I didn't know the second half is better and gives me a wonderful HEA. So I feel I am as prepared as I am going to be for it and look forward to diving in. Julie, I want to thank you for your review and the reviews of others who have helped me "steel myself" for this one. Being caught unaware would have been ten times worse.
Much love to you and thanks again for your concern!! Wow, I can't tell you how much that means to me. Really. :)

I will have to start reading this book when I am all by myself. I read a few of her Dark Hunter books and I did like them.
Well BB I think you are pretty great working with those poor children. I could not do it because I would want to take them all home with me. Makes you wonder why people that really don't deserve children have them and the ones that would be great parents can't have them. Keep up your good work.
Laura-I thought of you too and wondered how this book would be for you. There is a grat HEA though. And Tori is perfect for Ash. I really couldn't have asked for a better final third of this book.
Julie - Thank you for another wonderful review! QUESTION -- would I be cheating if I read ACHERON before the other DARK-HUNTER books, or do I need the back stories to appreciate ASH?Heather - you started this .. now I MUST read this book!!
BB - I commend you for the special work you do with these children. I can't imagine how hard it is on the emotions.
Laura - I KNEW you were a survivor! ::HUGS::
Ragus.
Ragus...NO NO NOYou NEED to read the rest to get a feel for Ash and the rest of the whole Dark Hunter legacy to see what a huge step this book is for the whole series. From the author forward in this book, she explains that the series will head in a slightly different direction and I just can't see getting the stunning affect of the book without having ALL the back story.
Hope this helps..
J
My Dear Ones, I was so moved by your comments and concerns. I walk a strange path, a "wounded healer" path with my work. How different am I from the girl selling her body downtown when I was that same girl running from small towns and bad relationships giving a (you name a sexual) favor for a ride or a place to sleep for a night? I like my work. I am very good at it. I wear clown noses and funny hats. I bring seeds and dirt, fresh cut flowers and herbs and talk to them about creating root systems of their own. I bring music and drums so that they might find their own rhythm. I bring maps and grid paper to plot, step by step, a way out of their current situation. Mostly, I bring joy and a different point of view. Thank you for caring. J and M as always your words humble me and bring me to tears. Ms. Naughty Muffin you are precious. Ragus, we don't know each other so thanks for your kind words. But yes, you have to start at the beginning.
Ms. Laura, I know we'll be fine, no matter what.
BB
Thanks, Ragus and Jen, you are incredible and so sweet. Thanks for thinking of me!!And Ragus, yes, you do need to read the entire DH series before Ash's book. Like Julie said, there is no way to understand the importance of Ash without reading those novels first. That's because he is in almost every one of them and reveals to us a different part of his compassionate heart and power. Also, Tory is in the "Dream-Hunter" so that's a must too. That's when we meet her for the first time and find out what makes her tick.
BB, yes, you and I will be fine, no matter what. You are the best! BTW, I have not read "Bastard out of Carolina" (successfully avoided that one). But I did read Pat Conroy's "Prince of Tides." Have you read that one? WOW, that was one of the most soul-shattering novels I've ever read. That one hit waaaaaaay too close to home for me, yet at the same time it was an incredible part of my recovery from child abuse. Very important book in my life for sure.

BB - I'm sorry we don't know each other better! It's my fault. I was in the process of completing my education this year and DETERMINED to let nothing get in the way of my XXX number of years trying to achieve this goal. Fortunately, I was able to reach this mark on 06/23/08. I say this to offer an excuse for not participating more frequently on GoodReads. I hope to change this pattern in the future. My friends here are AWESOME! You are beautiful, BB, as the "wounded healer", and I would love to learn how you found your way out of that darkness!Thank you Julie, Laura, and BB! I was afraid of that ... read the other books before ACHERON. What can I say .... I LOVE dessert before dinner :o)) However, I will start at the beginning so I can enjoy ASH to the full!!
Ragus.
Ragus, you crack me up! You and I are one of a kind for sure. Yeah, I always eat dessert before the meal, too, if I can get away with it. What can I say? I'm a pleasure-addict and loving every minute of it!! *naughty grin*And IMO reading the Dark-Hunter and Dream-Hunter series from the beginning to Ash's new book is pleasure with a capital P!
Congrats on your degree...YAY!!! Good for you!! I'm thrilled you have more time now to spend at Goodreads now. Totally awesome people here!! :)

Thank you, Laura, for the congrats! Now that I'm finished, the experience feels anticlamatic! But I feel honored to have recognized the opportunity and had the stamina to accomplish the goal. Boy, what a commitment to return to school!!YEAH ... you and me and DESSERTS!! I take small pleasures ANYWHERE I can get them! I'll follow your advice on reading the DARK-HUNTER series :o))
Ragus.
