I thought the premise was somewhat novel, albeit a bit contrived. but it was well told and didn't slow down. I listened to the audiobook and I enjoyed the reader who kept up with the voices and pace of the book, to the extent that I sought out the audio of the second book. The only irritant, and it was minor, was Gurney's wife, the passive-aggressive sort, someone who I felt like slapping on occasion, and I'm not a domestic abuse type of husband. She wouldn't answer reasonable questions from her husband, instead expecting him to know the answers. As a plot device it helped him focus but I still didn't like it. Maybe it was intentional.

All in all a good beginning to a series.
