I wavered between giving this book 2 stars or 3 stars. And if you had asked me at the beginning what I thought I would give it the answer would have been 4 stars. Why the variation? Simply put, this was one of the worst book endings I've ever read and definitely the worst Stephen King book ending I've read. (and he's written quite a few bad endings. It's his greatest weakness as a writer in my opinion. Well that and the fact that he finds it necessary to reuse certain phrases or sayings in multiple books or worse yet, beat a certain saying to death in a book. Example from It, "beep beep Ritchie") But I could have forgiven all his usual shenanigans and given it four stars if it had not ended the way it did. No spoilers but I will just say that it was sickening and unnecessary and completely a let down. And no I'm not a horror book prude. The more grotesque and twisted the better usually. But this ending had no reason. It also fell short of everything the book was building towards. So I give it a grudging 3 stars because until the end it was pretty fantastic. Creepy back stories, a past and present that seemed destined for an epic showdown. Ultimately though the past and present collided and it was at first sickening, then just flat out disappointing.
