it was amazing
bookshelves: read-aloud

This is one of my new favorite books. I read this book to my 5th grade class and they fell in love.

I am a personal fan of true stories, but the author does a fantastic job portraying Henry's feeling through third person omniscient. This allows for the reader to know exactly what he is thinking and feeling. The story did move a little fast for me between certain parts. I wanted to know more about him growing up and more about his live once he was free. I would definitely recommend reading the closing remarks to students.

The illustrations went beautifully with this text. The cover image immediately draws you to Henry. The images allow you and/or students to picture Henry's life, since no one knows exactly what it was like to be a slave.
