I think the message of this book is worth telling and I respect Trumbo for his ability to write an entire book where the protagonist can’t see or hear and never leaves his bed. However, I got really tired of the anger. I understand how mad Johnny must have been, considering his situation, but I think his anger would have been more potent if other emotions had played a bigger part. My favorite parts were when Johnny was remembering times before he was drafted. It gave more depth to his character and got me more emotionally involved. I just got really tired of hearing him scream in my ear.

I think today’s society is more aware of the horrors of war but at the time of this book’s publication, it is a message that would have meant more.
