The Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events, #1)
by Lemony Snicket, Brett Helquist

Ugh. Rarely have I read a book so artificial, trite and purposefully unpleasant. I do like Edward Gorey, so I thought that the allusive title would be more in the spirit of the weird and delightfully obscure. However, I found this book to be calculated and unoriginal, with nothing of whimsy or genuine strangeness. In addition, it was clumsily written in a deliberately stilted style none the more charming for being intentional. I don't entirely understand the popularity of this series, but suspect it has to do with the same urges that have made Hot Topic a shopping mall staple.

it's called "a series of unfortunate events" WERE YOU EXPECTING A BOOK ABOUT THREE HAPPY CHILDREN WHO RIDE UNICORNS IN THAIR FREE TIME?
Wow. I definitely found this book very entertaining and action-packed. I liked this book because its plot was a great one. It was about these three children that become orphans because their parents were killed one day in a fire that started in their home. They now had to move in with an uncle of there's that they had never met before. This man wasn't the sweet and loving uncle that made sure everything was alright for the children. He was evil and was planing on trying to steal the orphan's large fortune that their parents had left behind. I recommend this book to anyone who likes realistic fiction. I couldn't stop reading the book. I was dying to know what was gong to happen next and you will too.
I just dont see how in hell this book is unoriginal.the plot is one of the most, clever, original plots I've ever encountered, and violet, sunny, and clause are all so clever, making it a very engaging read
Thank you for the word "whimsy"! That is definitely what I found to be missing from this book, and that is what usually brings me to young adult books. Unfortunately, I won't be reading the rest of this series. :)
I am having a REALLY hard time figuring out any possible correlation between these books, which are wonderful, and Hot Topic, which is not.
Don't listen to these people, Suzanne. If they really cared about changing your mind, they would make sure they spelled and punctuated their persuasion tactics accurately. These books were about as good as seventeen-day-old chicken soup with live lionfish on the side. Your review is awesome!
I defy you if you can to find a single spelling and/or punctuation error in my "persuasion tactic."I still don't entirely understand why this particular reader completely missed the boat on this book, which I found to be quite whimsical and genuine (though only sometimes strange), especially as the series progresses, but that's their sorry right.
