bookshelves: punditry, philosophy, will-never-finish

Tried, but really couldn't get into it. Felt like I needed to know more background about the philosophies he discusses (Locke, Hobbes, Montesquieu, etc). Basically the idea is that a Utopian philosophy is incompatible with a free republic because a utopia requires too many individual concessions to the state (ie, uniqueness/individuality/success is abhorred, not celebrated).

I'm really not interested in comparative philosophy, or hell, any philosophy.
